Youth Recruitment Information
The Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre has helped to support children, youth and families living with grief for the last twelve years. We offer services and resources to families managing grief of all kinds, including the grief that comes from overdose and substance related deaths. In the last few years, there have been many more families asking for service at our Centre because they have experienced a death related to substance use or overdose. However, we also know that there are not many resources or services available to these families in Toronto. Therefore, our Centre is hoping to create these resources for families so that young people can better understand the death and their grief, and adults feel comfortable talking about these things with their children.
The Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre has received money from the Toronto Urban Health Fund and partnered with other community organizations to create these supports. We are hoping to speak with young people that have experienced a substance or overdose related death to make sure that what we create is based on lived experiences and provides families with what they need. We are hoping to speak with 12-13 young adults that have experienced a substance/overdose related death about their experiences. The thoughts and information that you share will be used to create some written resources for families (available on our website), and a presentation that will support families to talk to their children about substance use and overdose deaths.
If you are between the ages of 18 and 25, are English-speaking, and have experienced the death of a family member by substance use/overdose at least 6 months ago, we’d like to invite you to participate in a focus group with us. We will ask you some questions about your grief experiences and the services/information that you used/wanted after the death occurred. You will also hear stories from other youth in the group who have experienced a substance related death. . Please note: if you are not English-speaking, we are able to provide a one-on-one interview using translation services.
Focus groups will take place at our Centre in Toronto at a date and time that will be shared with you. They will last will last 2-3 hours. All participants will receive travel compensation for coming to our Centre (transit tickets or parking payment) and will be provided with a $10.00 gift card as a thank you for attending.
